How It Works

The Crash & Burn exercise is a stream-of-consciousness writing practice that helps jog your brain to uncover forgotten memories. It's a simple yet powerful technique to access stories you didn't realize you had.

The Process
  1. Set a timer for 10 minutes
  2. Write down whatever words come to your mind
  3. Link words and ideas together if it helps
  4. Don't worry about making sense—just keep writing
  5. When time is up, review what you've written for story triggers

When you sign up for StoryCoach, you'll get an email once a month reminding you to do the Crash & Burn exercise. Over time, you'll trigger memories that will add to your collection of potential story material.

Critical Guidelines

As Matthew Dicks shares in his book, follow these critical guidelines to make the most of your Crash & Burn exercise:

Don't get attached to any one idea

Let thoughts flow freely without fixating on specific ideas. The goal is quantity and variety.

Don't judge any thought or idea

Suspend all judgment. Every thought has potential value, regardless of how strange or insignificant it might seem.

Don't allow your fingers to stop moving

Maintain constant motion. If you get stuck, write the same word repeatedly until new ideas emerge.

Use Paper & Pen

Review Mindfully

After completing the exercise, review what you've written with curiosity rather than criticism. Circle or highlight words that trigger emotional responses for further exploration.
